The fifth European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO)

The Romanian Mathematical Society (RMS) in partnership with the Ministry of National Education and Scientific Research, the City Hall of Busteni and the School Inspectorate of Prahova County organizes the fifth European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) from 10th to 16th of April 2016, in Buşteni, Romania.
At the initiative of the British Mathematical Society, the first EGMO was held in 2012 in London. Next Olympiads were organized in Luxembourg (2013), Turkey (2014) and Belarus (2015), all enjoying a large participation, around 27 European countries and 5-6 invited countries from other continents.
EGMO is an international mathematics competition similar as difficulty level and format with the International Mathematical Olympiad. It was initiated with the purpose and desire to stimulate and motivate girls and young women to pursue their passion for mathematics. Socially there are still gender stereotypes and prejudices on girls studying mathematics and other sciences. EGMO aims to create a space where girls have the opportunity to capitalize the potential and mathematical talent on an international stage and thus be encouraged to consider the development of careers in these fields.
We emphasize the exceptional results obtained by the Romanian team in all four EGMO held so far and, in particular of Simona Diaconu, with four gold medals and first place in the Hall of Fame of the competition. Also last year, Simona won silver medal at the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad and the gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad where she was the girl with the highest score in the history of the International Olympiad team and the only girl in the national Olympiad team. Since last fall, Simona was accepted at Princeton where she's actually studying.
EGMO has gained an important place among competitions of its kind, and is very appreciated by the world mathematics community and supported by the Board of the International Olympiads and European Mathematical Societies, number of participating countries has increased from 19 in 2012 to 39 countries in 2016. This year, 150 girls (aged up to 20 years) from 39 countries, joined the competition: Albania, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Ecuador Spain, Finland, France, Georgia, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Republic of Moldova, Mexico, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Romania B, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Switzerland, Slovenia, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom and United States of America.
The competition schedule will consist of two tests which will be held on 12 and 13 of April and will take 4 hours and a half each.
Besides tests, participants will visit the Castle of Cantacuzino from Busteni and will attend at two conferences delivered by Viviana Ene, Professor at the University Ovidius from Constanta and Ana Caraiani, Professor at Princeton University. Ana Caraiani is a winning of a silver medal (2001) and two gold medals (2002 and 2003) at the International Mathematical Olympiad and the only woman who won 2 times the prestigious Putnam mathematics competition. Her participation at this competition is possible with the support of Google.

      About RMS

The Romanian Mathematical Society (RMS), founded in 1910, is one of the oldest scientific societies in Romania, with more than 100 years of continuous activity. It is aimed at contributing to the reinforcement and improvement of mathematical education, training and research. RMS was the initiator of the National Mathematical Olympiad in 1950 and of the International Olympiad in 1959 (romanian version).
